Last updated 7 October 2026. Please read this before you start. It is short on purpose.
The short version.
Renamery is a private service run by The Pocket App Company, Chicago, Illinois. We are not lawyers and not the government.
You can do every step yourself, and every government step is free or costs only the agency's own fee.
We do our best, but we cannot promise that any company or agency will accept a request, or how long it will take.
We are not a law firm
- Renamery is not a law firm. Nobody here is a lawyer, and nothing we say, write or show you is legal advice.
- Using Renamery does not make us your lawyer. If your situation is unusual (for example a court order, a name change that is not from a marriage or divorce, or an immigration question), talk to a lawyer.
We are not the government
- Renamery is not a government agency. We are not part of, approved by, or connected to the Social Security Administration, the US Department of State (passports), any state motor vehicle agency (DMV), or any other government office.
- We have no special access to any government office and cannot speed anything up there.
- We never log in to, or press anything on, a government (.gov) website. Government steps are guides that you follow yourself, and you pay any government fee directly to the agency.
You can do all of this yourself, for free
Changing your name with Social Security is free, at ssa.gov or at any Social Security office. Your driver's license is done at your state's motor vehicle agency, and your passport through the US Department of State. Most banks, cards and other companies change your name at no charge when you ask them yourself. Renamery saves you time; it does not do anything you could not do on your own.
No promises about results or timing
- Each company and agency makes its own rules and can change them without telling anyone. We send what they say they accept, but they decide.
- We do not guarantee that any request will be accepted, or by when. Times we show are estimates from published rules and from earlier customers.
- What we promise is delivery: we send your signed request and show you proof of delivery on your plan. Companies reply to you, usually within 2 to 6 weeks; when a reply is late we re-send another way or call them for you.
The AI can make mistakes
- Much of Renamery is done by AI software: planning, researching companies we have not seen before, filling in forms, and answering your questions.
- It can be wrong. Check every form and letter before you sign it. If something looks wrong, do not sign; tell us, or fix it by hand.
You are responsible for what you give us and what you sign
- What you tell us must be true, and the certificate and ID you upload must be genuine and yours.
- Anything you sign is your statement. Read it first.
- We send letters in your name, as your agent, only after you have signed or clearly agreed. Nothing goes out in your name without that.
We never ask for your Social Security number
We never ask for, see or store your Social Security number. Where an agency's form needs it, you write it in yourself. If anyone claiming to be Renamery asks for it, or for a password, it is not us.
Limits
- To the fullest extent the law allows, Renamery and its owner are not responsible for any loss or harm of any kind that comes from using the service: rejected or delayed requests, mistakes in forms or letters, fees charged by agencies or companies, missed deadlines, travel, lost documents, or anything a company or agency does.
- The service is provided "AS IS" and "AS AVAILABLE", with no warranty of any kind: no warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or that any company or agency will accept a request.
- We are never responsible for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages.
- If, despite this, we are found responsible, the most we will ever owe you in total is the amount you paid us (or $0 if you paid nothing).
- Assumption of risk: you choose which requests to send and you check every form and letter before it goes out.
- Some states do not allow some of these limits; in those states they apply only as far as the law allows. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law, such as for fraud or intentional harm. If you live in North Carolina, these no-warranty and liability limits do not apply to you.
- The terms give the full wording, including when you cover claims caused by false information you gave or documents you signed, and how disputes are resolved (individual arbitration, no class actions).
How to stop and delete
You can stop at any time. Press "Delete this name change and my photos" at the bottom of your plan and your case and files are deleted at once; nothing is sent after that. Letters already sent cannot be called back. The privacy policy says exactly what is kept and for how long.
